ENJOYING THAT ONE HOUR LUNCH BREAK IN MELBOURNE
April 7th 2008 00:23
There are a few things I love to do in Melbourne come lunch time.
That precious one hour sandwiched between a long a day at work is my only respite and I hold it close to my heart.
So here’s a few things I love to do come lunch time:
1. The Food thing
Yup, I guess lunch is also designated to get something to eat. I’m lucky to have a Trolley lady come through our floor brandishing sandwiches and hot food. But on the occasions that there isnt anything that I love from her trolley, there are a few shops I love to frequent
David Jones Food Hall (basement of the Men’s Department building. Enter from Bourke Rd Mall) webbie
There’s only three words to describe this gourmet food heaven in a nutshell: Food Glorious Food.
From sushi to cakes to pizza to salads, this is the place to go during your lunch break if you cannot decide what to have and also appreciate good food and not the slop they often serve in food courts in and around the CBD.
This is my idea of food heaven: fresh salads so tantalizing I can almost lick the glass between us, cakes so beautiful it would be sinful to cut open, seafood so poshly arranged it was hurting me to move away without buying a crayfish or two.
Little Cupcakes (on Degraves Street, near the corner of Flinders) webbie
So let’s skip the main food part and just go for the dessert.
Think mini cupcakes smothered in heavenly buttercream, in a size perfect for cramming the whole thing in your mouth. Don’t forget to go for the cupcake called Red Velvet.
To die for. Gastro heaven.
2. The Nerdy thing
If books are your thing and you’re like me on the train on the way home, Ipod on one hand and a book in another, then this is the place to go: the Melbourne Public Library (in the CAE building on Flinders Lane) webbie
Like suburban libraries, membership is free and books can be borrowed for three weeks (a plus is that you can renew books online too if Anna Karenina is taking you longer than three weeks to read)
If work gets a bit too much and you need a little siesta, this 2 level library has many nooks and crannies to nod off. I always spot quite a few businessmen nodding off, drooling over their open books. Not a very appetising look but a smart thing to do considering it’s a library and it’s awesomely quiet and warm during the winter months and airconditioned during the summer.
3. The Shopping thing
Bourke Street Mall
If shopping is your thing, then the CBD has far too many places to go to.
There’s the Bourke Mall of course, with Myer and David Jones offering a great place to spend an hour or even a whole day trailing through its racks. Sussan for its sleepwear and Sportsgirl for its funky accessories are fantabulous to spend a good hour on, and Priceline (entering from Bourke Street Mall escalators) cannot be missed. The newly refurbished Priceline store is now bigger and it also stocks perfumes you’d normally buy from the big department stores.
Collins St (between Swanston and Elizabeth area)
Starting from the Tiffany end, I love frequenting this piece of Collins St.
Country Road, Nine West and Tiffany and Co are just a few stores to name. If you wanna indulge in a little Chanel and Gucci, it’s only a block away. Go nuts and hold on to your credit card.
Go Cheapo
My idea of cheap is running amok in Target (a block away from Bourke Rd Mall on Bourke St) and Big W (up on Swanston St, Queen Victoria Building). Yup, you can never have far too many bike pumps or car air fresheners you cant find at Myer or DJs.
Too bad most lunch breaks are only an hour (if you know of a job that gives you 2 hour luch breaks, can you please let me know so I can apply now?).
But sometimes, when walking towards all these places are a bit of a hassle, I would usually settle on a nice park bench on Southbank when the weather is good, watching the lunch break joggers sweating it out.
I also watch out for the seagulls too, who always manage to come around and scare the beejesus out of me by flying so low and so soon. Hold on to your hot chips!
